Teachers matter most.
The wellbeing of our children and school communities start with the personal wellness of our teachers.
When educators feel balanced and cared for, it causes a trickle-down effect. Through developing their own mindfulness and social-emotional competencies, teachers transform the ways they interact with their students, approaching problems with more flexibility and kindness, better able to regulate their own emotions and responses, and reporting generally higher levels of satisfaction and optimism.
The Mind-Heart Teaching Approach
In the same way that a swimming coach cannot stand beside a pool and simply explain how to swim, mindfulness and SEL is not just about explicit instruction. We need to learn it, live it, and embed it meaningfully into our school culture. And this begins with staff understanding.
Through a series of introductory workshops and hands-on experiences, educators will come to understand what mindfulness means, how it differs from (and compliments) Social-Emotional Learning, the importance of self-care and emotional attunement, and how they can incorporate the gift of mindful awareness into their everyday life - both inside and out of a school setting.
It is only after our teachers begin to embody these practices that we can move into instructional techniques for students in the classroom. This allows for a true, humanistic education where children learn not only through direct teaching, but through social modeling and experience, as well.
